The guest speaker at last week’s meeting of Ballynahinch Camera Club was the award-winning landscape photographer Paul Killeen. Paul is based in Belfast and was Overall Winner of World Landscape Photographer 2022.
During his talk, Paul showed many of his prints and explained, in his own inimitable way, how they were taken and on many occasions, the story behind the print. One such story described how he, and his camera gear, ended up in the ocean when a larger than normal wave demolished his tripod. Needless to say, his camera did not survive the sea-water experience but thankfully his memory card, containing many of his images, did.
Paul is not an advocate of Photoshop and prefers to get things right ‘in camera’ and only uses photo-editing software to make minor adjustments to his images. He made no secret of the fact that he has returned to many of the locations on numerous occasions to find the correct light, state of tide or threatening sky. He has a camper van and thinks nothing of heading off to Donegal or Mayo on the off chance of obtaining a good image, usually at some ungodly hour. Who said photography was easy?
Paul’s photographs can be viewed on Instagram and Viewbug and are certainly worth a look. The many questions which were asked throughout his talk and the warm round of applause as he finished were testimony of how much his audience appreciated his presentation.
This week’s meeting of the club will have a festive flavour as thoughts, and cameras, turn towards Christmas.
